Newssuper Kolkata, 03rd March, 2025:Limited Height Subway (LHS) is an important infrastructure component in Railway Network which helps significantly in preventing accidents by providing safe crossings for vehicles and pedestrians under the Railway Tracks. Hence, LHS reduces risk of collision between trains and road users – thereby facilitating both train operations and risk free road traffic. Sealdah Division of Eastern Railway has recently accomplished a historic feat by successfully commissioning two (2) more Limited Height Subways (LHS) simultaneously at Level Crossing Gates 105 and 116 on the busy Krishnanagar – Lalgola section. On Sunday (02.03.2025), the insertions have been executed successfully by using cutting edge sheet piling technology in Open Cut Box Insertion.

Sheet piling plays a pivotal role in improving safety and robustness of infrastructure projects. This unique method provides superior earth retention, groundwater control and ensures stability in excavation work. At the same time, it reduces the risk of track subsidence and soil displacement, making it a superior choice for construction near running Rail Tracks. Moreover, the sheet piling method enhances worker safety by securing a safer working environment with reinforced barriers minimising disruptions to the surrounding area.

Despite the complexity of the task, the sheet piling work was completed simultaneously at two level crossing gates (105 & 116) within stipulated time with minimum disruption of passenger services. The insertion of 2 LHS structures at one go marks a significant step towards eliminating level crossing gates – which are obviously safety hazard and inconvenient for road users.

Significant Infrastructure Upgradation has been completed in the shadow of this mega project for the sake of enhanced Railway safety and efficiency. These critical works pertaining to Engineering, Signal & Telecom, and Overhead Equipment departments were undertaken simultaneously to bolster safety, improved operational efficiency and ensure seamless movement of train in the all important section. The comprehensive infrastructure and maintenance work executed with meticulous planning and precision.

These extensive infrastructure upgradation works underscore Sealdah Division’s unwavering commitment to providing a safer, faster and more efficient Railway network. The successful completion of these works will contribute to smoother train operations, reduced maintenance requirements and enhanced passenger safety. Under the dynamic and inspiring leadership of Sri Deepak Nigam, DRM, Sealdah Division is maintaining highest safety standards in Railway construction by putting together innovation, team efforts and efficient manpower utilisation.
