**Advanced train-detection system to strengthen signalling reliability during waterlogging and adverse weather conditions

In a significant technological initiative aimed at improving the reliability of train operations and minimising punctuality loss during the monsoon season, Eastern Railway has successfully commissioned the Multi Section Digital Axle Counter (MSDAC) system at Barrackpore station on September 21, 2026.
Under the leadership and guidance of Ms. Gitika Pandey, General Manager, Eastern Railway, the Railway is progressively upgrading critical signalling installations with modern technology to further enhance operational reliability, safety and punctuality.
The work at Barrackpore was undertaken by Sealdah Division under the supervision of Shri Rajeev Saxena, Divisional Railway Manager, Sealdah, as part of sustained efforts to strengthen signalling infrastructure at locations vulnerable to waterlogging during heavy rainfall.
The newly commissioned MSDAC system has been provided in parallel with the existing DC track circuits at Platform Nos. 4, 2, 1A and 1, as well as on the Down Suburban Line at Barrackpore station.
Barrackpore being an important and busy suburban station, reliability of signalling infrastructure is crucial for maintaining smooth train operations. Traditional DC track circuits in certain low-lying sections may become vulnerable to operational disruption during heavy rainfall and waterlogging. The introduction of MSDAC provides an additional and independent means of train detection, thereby enhancing the overall availability and reliability of the signalling system.
The parallel arrangement of MSDAC with the existing track circuits substantially reduces vulnerability to weather-induced track circuit failures and helps maintain continuity of signalling operations during adverse weather conditions. This, in turn, contributes towards reducing avoidable train detention, improving punctuality and ensuring smoother suburban services for thousands of daily commuters.

The technological upgrade at Barrackpore marks another important step in Eastern Railway’s continuing programme of signalling modernisation and system strengthening, with special emphasis on maintaining dependable suburban services during the monsoon season.
