Newssuper Kolkata, September 26, 2026:

Under the leadership of Ms. Gitika Pandey, General Manager, Eastern Railway, Swachhata Hi Seva–2026 activities continued with renewed momentum across all four divisions—Howrah, Sealdah, Asansol and Malda—as well as major workshops at Kanchrapara, Liluah and Jamalpur. Embracing the theme “Swachhata Mein Sahbhag: Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat,” Eastern Railway is undertaking a wide range of initiatives focusing on cleanliness, environmental sustainability, public participation and responsible waste management.

Malda Division conducted “Sports for Swachhata” activities including box cricket, basketball, volleyball and traditional sports, followed by cleanliness drives promoting the zero-waste concept. Intensive cleaning was also undertaken along the road between the Divisional Railway Hospital and Divisional Railway Manager’s Office, while passenger awareness programmes at several stations focused on four-bin waste segregation, proper waste disposal and avoiding single-use plastic.

Asansol Division organised a “Sports for Swachhata” volleyball match at MDZTI Bhuli followed by a cleanliness drive, besides conducting health check-ups for Safai Mitras at Asansol. Cleanliness and passenger awareness drives were undertaken at Durgapur and Raniganj, while Swachh Neer activities were conducted at Andal. Awareness programmes were also held at Dubrajpur and Simultala, with participation from students and faculty.

Howrah Division undertook pond-cleaning drives near Sheoraphuli and Azimganj City stations, focusing on the cleanliness of water bodies and their surroundings. An intensive cleanliness drive was also conducted at Bolpur Railway Playground to promote a clean and hygienic environment.

Sealdah Division intensified cleanliness activities across railway premises, with zero-waste sporting events followed by collective cleanliness drives. Special post-festival cleaning was undertaken at railway water bodies, including proper disposal and composting of flowers and other organic waste. Cleanliness and thematic branding continued at heritage stations, museum coaches, Swachh Iconic sites and high-footfall tourist stations, while community sanitary complexes, public toilets and heritage railway buildings received special attention.

Shri Shibram Majhi, Chief Public Relations Officer, Eastern Railway, said, “Swachhata Hi Seva is not merely a cleanliness campaign but a collective responsibility that calls for sustained public participation. Through initiatives such as Sports for Swachhata, post-festival cleanliness drives, waste segregation and awareness activities, Eastern Railway is encouraging railway personnel, passengers and the community to adopt responsible and sustainable cleanliness practices.”

The initiatives reaffirm Eastern Railway’s commitment to strengthening cleanliness, hygiene, environmental responsibility and public participation across its railway establishments under Swachhata Hi Seva–2026.
