Newssuper report Tania Kundu Kolkata: 17 Apr 2026.
In continuation of its ongoing efforts to enhance station hygiene, Sealdah Division organized an extensive cleanliness drive and public outreach program across the Sealdah suburban network today to mark the 173rd Anniversary of Indian Railways. Drawing inspiration from the vision and leadership of General Manager, Eastern Railway, Sri Milind Deouskar, division executed these initiatives to reinforce the mission of a clean and green railway network.
Since Sealdah is primarily recognized for its massive suburban passenger base, the celebrations were strategically focused on the suburban sections to directly impact its core commuters.
The activities kicked off at Ballygunge Station, where a massive “Swachhta Campaign” was launched, involving railway officials and staff in deep-cleaning activities across platforms and station premises. This initiative is part of an ongoing and continuous cleanliness program dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of hygiene and maintenance across the division.
As part of the initiative at Ballygunge, a specific sensitization drive was conducted for station vendors, where officials emphasized the importance of waste management and requested them to dispose of waste only in dedicated areas.
Simultaneously, at Sealdah Station, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Sealdah, Sri Rajeev Saxena, personally interacted with commuters, highlighting that world-class facilities require “Jan Bhagidari” (public participation) to remain sustainable and bridge the gap between authorities and the public. He also urged travellers to take ownership of the station’s cleanliness as part of this sustained effort.
- Through these combined actions of cleaning, vendor regulation, and direct public appeal, Sealdah Division has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the suburban railway experience into one that is both efficient and exemplary in its cleanliness.
