Kolkata, June 05, 2025:World Environment Day is celebrated globally on 5th June to raise awareness about the importance of protecting mother Earth through environment conservation, ecosystem shielding and sustainability.
It transpires that, our planet is on the verge of choking on plastic as because approximately 11 million tones of plastic waste are leaking into aquatic ecosystems every year. Annually, more than 400 million tones of plastic is produced worldwide out of which less than 10% is recycled. In an endeavour to save the earth from the menace of plastic, *official theme for World Environment Day 2025 is “Beat Plastic Pollution.”*
Sealdah Division has organized various activities at all stations and field units to celebrate WED for raising awareness about the adverse impacts of plastic waste on ecosystems, wildlife and human health. A few important activities, detailed hereunder, were led by Shri Rajeev Saxena, DRM/Sealdah :-
1. A plantation drive was organised at Ballygunge station and throughout the Sealdah Division. This initiative underscores Division’s unwavering commitment to promote a greener future and fostering a sustainable Railway system.
2. A pledge was taken at Ballygunge station in presence of DRM and at Divisional Headquarter in presence of Divisional officers to reiterate our unflinching commitment to protect the environment from plastic pollution as microplastics in the seas have already outnumbered stars in our galaxy.
3. A Nukkad Natak was staged by members of Scouts and Guides highlighting the solutions and to mobilize available resources for eradicating micro plastics for a cleaner and sustainable future.
4. Cleanliness Drives were initiated at different stations across the Division with a focus on spreading awareness on proper segregation of wastes and plastic waste management.
Condition is grave and time is running out. To keep global warming below 1.5 degree C this century, we must halve annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Sealdah Division is working in a mission mode in tandem with the Ministry of Railways to make Indian Railways, the National Carrier, Carbon Neutral by 2030.
