In a significant boost to regional rail connectivity, Eastern Railway, Sealdah Division successfully commissioned the final phase of the Plassey–Jiaganj (PLY–JJG) doubling project at Berhampur Court (BPC) station completed at 4:20 AM on 17.0.3.2026.
This comprehensive infrastructure and signalling upgrade marks the transition to a highly efficient “Common Loop” layout. The project involved the commissioning of three new Common Loop Lines—Line No. 3 (594m), Line No. 4 (377m), and Line No. 5 (348m)—alongside the opening of New Island Platforms No. 4 and 5.
To support these additions, the station’s electronic interlocking system was upgraded to a state-of-the-art Nippon 2-out-of-2 architecture, effectively doubling the number of functional route capacity from 25 to 50.
Major Benefits for Passengers:
• Reduced Platform Congestion: The opening of the new Island Platforms No. 4 and 5 provides significantly more space for travellers, ensure smoother and safer boarding and deboarding experience even during peak hours.
• Minimized Delays and Better Punctuality : With the new “Simultaneous Movement” capability, trains can now be received and dispatched from both Up and Down directions at the same time. This prevents “bottlenecks” where one train has to wait outside the station for another to clear the platform.
• Increased Train Frequency : The addition of three Common Loop lines and the extension of existing lines (Line 1 increased to 890m from 680m and Line 2 to 807m from 564m) increases the station’s total capacity. This infrastructure allows the railway to handle more passenger and freight trains daily, paving the way for future service expansions.
• Enhanced Safety and Reliability : Passengers will benefit from new technology, including Frauscher make Multi Section Digital Axle Counter (MSDAC) for precise train detection and dual Integrated Power Supplies (IPS) to prevent signalling failures during power outages.
• Modern Amenities : The upgrade also included the installation of new electric lifting barriers at L.C. gates (129/E and 132/T) and advanced fire detection systems, ensuring a safer environment for both passengers and the local community.
This modernization project not only completes the long-awaited doubling work in the section but also transforms Berhampur Court into a high-capacity transit hub, Sealdah Division ensure more reliable and comfortable journey for thousands of daily commuters.
