Under the visionary leadership and guidance of Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, the Sealdah Division of Eastern Railway is set to undergo a massive infrastructural overhaul. The plan aims to address the rapidly growing passenger demand and modernize the network for a seamless commuting experience.
Emphasizing the government’s commitment to urban rail development, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw stated:
“We’re expanding coaching terminals in key cities to meet rising passenger demand and reduce congestion. This move will upgrade the railway network and significantly improve nationwide connectivity.”
To transform the commuter experience, Sealdah Division is implementing a multi-layered infrastructure strategy. This focuses on removing bottlenecks and ensure that the network can support a higher frequency of trains with precision.
To optimize rake management and ensure seamless departures, Sealdah division is significantly increasing capacity through new stabling line and create high-capacity hubs in Sealdah (Woodgola) will add 4 lines, while Belgharia siding will see a major boost with 6 new lines, Kalyani (KYI) is slated for 4 lines, with additional stabling infrastructure being integrated at Bongaon, Krishnanagar City (KNJ), Canning, and Diamond Harbour.
To minimize train detention, new loop lines are being engineered at Kulpi, Lalgola, and Gede. These additions will ensure that goods and slow-moving trains do not obstruct high-speed passenger services, improving overall punctuality.
The division will also execute comprehensive yard remodelling at 13 strategic stations, including major junctions like Krishnanagar City, Bongaon, Barrackpore, and Diamond Harbour to replace legacy layouts with modern, streamlined track configurations and these upgrades are specifically designed to accommodate the 2times growth in passenger traffic anticipated by 2030. As well as the Division has planned for commissioning automatic signalling modernisation at Lakegardens – Budge Budge, Baruipur – Diamond Harbour, Sonarpur – Canning, Ranaghat – Krishnanagar sections to improve train handling, reduce congestion and enhance punctuality.
To bolster regional connectivity and handle high-frequency suburban services, three critical “Line Capacity” projects have been prioritized:
1. *Doubling of the Ranaghat–Bangaon (BNJ) section.*
2. *Construction of a Third Line between Ranaghat and Krishnanagar City (KNJ).*
3. *Construction of a Third Line between Kalyani (KYI) and Ranaghat.*
DRM Sealdah Sri Rajeev Saxena stated that this projects are being undertaken under the guidance of Sri Milind K Deouskar, General Manager/ER. The planned upgrades are specifically designed to eliminate long-standing operational bottlenecks in Sealdah Division. By increasing the number of stabling lines and remodelling congested yards, Division aims to resolve issues related to platform availability, engine reversal delays, and terminal congestion. This holistic approach ensures that the division is fully equipped to handle both current pressures and future growth, providing a more reliable and punctual service for millions of daily commuters. Furthermore surveys will be continued to identify suitable locations for creating more stabling lines, pits and other infrastructures across the division.
