In a exemplary display of courage and presence of mind, Sri Soumen Ganguly, a Pointsman, Bira Station, saved the life of a old lady passenger in the morning of December 18, 2025.

The incident occurred on Line No. 1 as the 33365 Barasat-Bangaon Local was approaching the platform no 1 towards Bangaon (UP direction). The Old lady passenger, while crossing the tracks, found herself directly in the path of the incoming train. Witnessing the imminent danger, Sri Ganguly acted without a moment’s hesitation. Ignoring the grave risk to his own life, he leapt onto the tracks and pulled the Old lady passenger to safety just seconds before the train passed through.

The Old lady passenger, deeply moved by the incident, submitted a formal written letter of appreciation to the Railway authorities. In her letter, she expressed her profound gratitude to the Railways and specifically credited Sri Ganguly for giving her a “second life.”

In recognition of his selfless act and exceptional devotion to duty, Divisional Railway Manager, Sealdah Sri Rajeev Saxena honored Sri Soumen Ganguly with a bravery award and said that Sri Ganguly’s swift reflexes and courageous heart, noting that such employees are the pride of the Indian Railways.
He also stated that this such type of bravery is a testament to the vigilance of our field staff. While we celebrate his heroism, we also urge all passengers to prioritize their safety by using Foot Over Bridges (FOBs) and never crossing the tracks.
